Rival 34

Rival 34's are renowned as a fast, all weather cruising yacht, combining excellent sailing performance with comfortable accommodation, being well balanced, compact, sturdy and easy to handle with excellent windward ability and an easy motion. They are one of the all time greats for long distance cruising but are also easy for short-handed crews to manage with roller reefing headsail and the main sheet being handy for the helmsman. She was designed and developed by Peter Brett. Mei Wah was built by Southern Boatbuilding Co Ltd in Southamton in 1978 with the deep draught option fitted.

This boat was found languishing in the Caribbean after being singlehanded to Australia and back and is currently undergoing a complete restoration. She was hauled in 1998, the gel coat was professionally peeled in 2000 had 10 coats of epoxy applied. All interior wood has been stripped bare and a minimum of four coats of varnish applied. The saloon has been relined with white foam backed vinyl and new lights fitted. Saloon reupholstered. Bilges and all lockers stripped and painted. New floor frames and teak paneled floors fitted. Teak slats cut, shaped and numbered, to be fitted in cockpit after painting. There is a new, still in the box, Profurl furler to be fitted. The rigging was upgraded from 6mm to 7mm in NZ some years ago.

There is very good access to the engine. Accommodation consists of a vee berth in the forepeak, a quarter berth, currently used for storage and in the saloon there is a convertible double berth to port and a single berth to starboard. The interior has beautiful honey coloured teak paneling.
